Emergency Medical Technicians provide out of hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. Emergency Medical Technicians are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.

$10.00/hour wage for classroom hours + benefits package with a two-year employment commitment.
Upon passing exam, EMTs are ready to work on an ambulance making up to $30,000 a year with room to grow up to $45,000 with additional shift-friendly company-sponsored paramedic certification.

How to become an EMT in South Carolina?
To operate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in South Carolina, you must gain a South Carolina Emergency Medical Technician certification from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). To qualify, you must satisfy the following requirements:
Successfully complete all sections of a DHEC-approved EMT course including the didactic, practical, and clinical requirements
Successfully complete the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) cognitive (knowledge) and DHEC-approved psychomotor (skills) exams and receive subsequent EMT national certification
Create a profile in DHEC’s EMS credentialing system
Complete the EMT Certification Application, including upload of current and valid CPR credential, in the EMS credentialing system and submit to DHEC
Pass a criminal background check
Note: You must first pass both the NREMT cognitive exam and the DHEC-approved psychomotor exam before beginning Step 3.
You are required by state law to keep your DHEC-issued EMT certification card on your person at all times when functioning as an EMT. If you lose your card, order a replacement certification card by calling 803-545-4269.Â
