Meet The President
The Denmark Technical College (DTC) Area Commission members have selected the College’s new learning-leader, concluding a nationwide search. The Commission voted unanimously to name Dr. Willie L. Todd, Jr. as the College’s 12th president. Dr. Todd assumed the helm of the institution on January 13, 2020.
“Following a thorough search process, we’re very pleased to select Dr. Todd as Denmark Technical College’s next president. His leadership in academic and student affairs coupled with his expertise in institutional development and curriculum design at various HBCUs over the last twenty-four years underscores his ability to continue the strong momentum Denmark Tech has built. Dr. Todd has proved he holds contemporary ‘best practice’ ideals along with traditional workforce ethics that will allow him to move Denmark Tech into a more prominent position as a technical college. Our future is bright as we support and encourage the momentum that the Institution has gained and we look forward to Denmark Technical College’s reinstatement as the producer of premier graduates,” stated Mr. James Bowden, DTC National Alumni President and At-Large Area Commissioner.
Dr. Todd stated, “Denmark Technical College has a commitment to an ‘enduring spirit’ that promotes the fostering of an innovative learning-arena for all and the creation of a stronger co-curricular experience for students and staff. We [DTC] continue to possess the grit needed when times get hard, and to have the strength to push forward for a better Denmark Technical College. These, and many other factors are assurance to me that Denmark Tech is an amazing place. I am honored to continue my journey at this historic institution. I look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to transform the lives.” Todd’s vision is simple and shared by many at the College: “to make Denmark Technical College a recognized, high-performing Technical College with graduates that are not only capable and competitive but also creative and inventive.”
Dr. Todd will foster this vision by building capacity through outlining a spirit of collaboration and focusing on shared governance. These are tools have propelled him in the past and will be cornerstones as he helms Denmark Technical College to greater success. “Denmark Technical College is my new home. I chose to come primarily because I support the College’s mission and I understand the impact that DTC and like-institutions have on the lives of families all across this great nation. Denmark Technical College is well poised to meet the needs of our constituents as we prepare them as local, regional, national and global workforce leaders,” said Todd.
Todd has an extensive record in higher education. His service includes Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Wiley College (Marshall, Tx), Vice Provost (I) and Associate Vice Provost at Norfolk State University (Norfolk, Va.), and adjunct instructor at Georgia State University at Perimeter College (Decatur, Ga.). During his tenure at Clark Atlanta University (Atlanta, Ga.), he served as Executive Director of Student Affairs, Director of Leadership and Student Development, Undergraduate Program Coordinator, and faculty member.
Dr. Todd’s influence in higher education is mirrored by his work in several professional and civic organizations. He is a named Fellow of the Zeta cohort of the Higher Education Leadership Foundation. Also, he was a Regional Director for the Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society. Dr. Todd is a nationally recognized playwright who has served as editor of both the National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts Encore Journal and the Charles Chestnut Society’s Newsletter. In 2018, Dr. Todd also co-founded the HBCU Learning Ecosystem, a collaboration of HBCUs with the primary purpose of addressing institutional effectiveness.
“I am privileged and blessed to have the opportunity to lead Denmark Technical College as its twelfth president,” Dr. Todd said. “I thank Dr. Christopher Hall for his leadership over the past few years as the Interim President. Denmark Technical College has dedicated faculty, staff, students, and alumni. I’m humbled by the College’s historic contributions to our service area, the State of South Carolina, and the Nation. Now we begin the work of collaboratively building on the solid foundation for which Denmark Tech is historically known. We eagerly look forward to being a vital learning community well into the 21st Century.
