SRR Gift Helps Transport Denmark Tech Students to a Brighter Future

Savannah River Remediation (SRR), the liquid waste contractor at Savannah River Site (SRS), further strengthened its ties with Denmark Technical College (DTC) through a financial gift that has enabled the purchase of a van for transporting students.

SRR President and Project Manager Phil Breidenbach pointed out that the funds uphold a promise that was part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the company and DTC. While the new vehicle can be used for several purposes, its main role is to transport students to SRS to participate in job-training opportunities.

“The idea of this gift for the van purchase actually was inspired by well-received remarks made last year by Congressman Jim Clyburn,” Breidenbach said. “He told a group of us at SRS about the importance of transportation for students who might otherwise have none of their own. This van could help open the door of opportunity for a group of students seeking to put their education to work.”

DTC President Dr. Willie L. Todd, Jr. expressed his gratitude for SRR’s execution of its MOU and support for the college.

“SRR performs a powerful service for our students,” said Dr. Todd. “In late-2020, we signed the memorandum that bonds our two organizations to strengthen our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum. In turn, our collaboration offers the potential of promising internships and job possibilities for our graduates.”

DTC is one of South Carolina’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The MOU seeks to build the college’s STEAM program through:

  • Improving college-to-work programs for veterans;
  • Identifying students for potential internships in the liquid waste program; and,
  • Identifying and training students who could fill potential jobs at SRR.

SRR is a team of companies led by Amentum with partners Bechtel National, Jacobs, and BWX Technologies, Inc. Critical subcontractors for the contract are Orano, Atkins, and Amentum N&E Technical Services.
