Denmark Technical College has named Robert Young as the new head men’s soccer coach, bringing a fresh perspective and a player-focused coaching style to one of the college’s fastest-growing athletic programs.
Young most recently served as assistant coach at Palmetto Scholars Academy, where he helped lead the team to back-to-back region championships in 2022 and 2023, a lower state title in 2022 and a state championship game appearance the same year. His success at the high school level is matched by his strong presence in South Carolina’s club soccer scene, including work with KOSA/NOSA FC, Platinum FC and a variety of leagues throughout the Charleston region.
While at KOSA/NOSA FC, Young guided the team to a 2024 KOSA Cup championship and secured runner-up finishes in the 2025 Border Cup and Surf Charleston Spring Tournament.
“I pride myself on helping players grow as athletes and as individuals,” Young said. “My approach is about creating an energetic training environment with clear goals. When players are prepared to solve problems during play, they become confident, resilient and ready to win.”
In addition to his on-field leadership, Young developed Golden Academia, a customized training model designed to enhance technical skills, build mental focus and improve physical performance.
“Coach Young brings a refreshing combination of enthusiasm and player development focus to our program,” said Willie L. Todd Jr., Ph.D., president and CEO of Denmark Technical College. “His ability to connect with student-athletes and foster a competitive yet supportive culture will help move our program forward.”
“Young is a proven coach with a clear vision and the passion to build something special here,” added Javon Gilliard, Denmark Technical College athletic director. “He understands the power of mentorship and strategy in shaping young men both as athletes and as leaders. We are excited to see where he takes the program.”
Young steps into a pivotal role as Denmark Tech looks to expand the reach and impact of its men’s soccer program, which officially launched in 2021 as part of a broader effort to enhance student life and athletic opportunities on campus.
