Johnson-Coleman joins Denmark Technical College as vice president for institutional advancement and effectiveness

Denmark Technical College welcomed Dr. Sasha Johnson-Coleman as the new vice president for institutional advancement. Johnson-Coleman assumed the role on June 16 and immediately set to work,  implementing her 90-day strategy which covers alumni relations, fundraising, human resources, statistical research and public information. 

Johnson-Coleman began her career as an ESL tutor and adjunct faculty and after earning her Ph.D., became an assistant professor, tenured associate professor, interim assistant director of the writing center, interim chair of the department of English, special assistant to the provost and assistant vice provost for academic engagement.  She is currently a faculty development facilitator at two institutions and a fellow with the US Department of State’s English Language Program, working with universities in Lebanon and the Ukraine.  

Johnson-Coleman has liaised with divisions of institutional effectiveness and assessment, supporting the institutional-wide processes of program reviews and assessments and student learning outcomes. She has conducted workshops for faculty and staff regarding standards for assessing exams on SLOs, curriculum design and course development, various instructional methods and the use of technology in the classroom.  She has also chaired multiple institutional and department-wide committees with regards to the general education curriculum, the quality enhancement plan, faculty and staff evaluation, promotion and tenure. 

“Recently, Dr. Johnson-Coleman participated in an intense executive readiness program with one of the nation’s top advancement professionals to begin building a 21st century institutional advancement operation. Her ability to transfer communication, planning, strategic planning and program implementations skills makes her well suited for Denmark Technical College during this season of tremendous growth,” said Dr. Willie L. Todd, president and CEO. 

Johnson-Coleman earned a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Georgia, an M.A. in Slavic languages and literature (Russian linguistics) from the University of Virginia, a B.A. in sociology with a Russian minor from the University of Richmond, the title of certified online instructor with the Learning Resources Network and the title of certified VALUE institute scorer with the Association of American Colleges and Universities.  She has over nineteen years of experience in higher education at four-year historically black colleges and universities and two-year predominantly white institutions.

The citizens of Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell counties deserve an affordable educational option that will help them and the community to continue to thrive and grow in the new cycle of upward mobility,” said Johnson-Coleman. 

Johnson-Coleman has additionally worked extensively with human resources, student recruitment, accreditation, strategic planning and risk management. She began her career at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, formerly DeKalb Technical College.
