Mission Statement and Student Learning Outcomes

Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Human Services Program at Denmark Technical College is to prepare graduates for entry-level employment in a variety of human services and helping professions and/or for transfer to baccalaureate degree programs in human services or related fields. The program equips students with the foundational knowledge, professional skills, and ethical principles necessary to deliver effective services across diverse agency, organizational, and community settings.

Program Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs)

Upon successful completion of the Human Services Program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Assessment and Interviewing Skills
    Demonstrate the ability to identify, apply, and evaluate core components of the interview and assessment process within human services practice.
  2. Self-Awareness and Professional Development
    Analyze personal values, personality traits, reaction patterns, interpersonal styles, strengths, and limitations as they relate to effective professional practice.
  3. Ethical and Professional Standards
    Apply ethical standards and professional guidelines consistent with the human services profession when addressing client needs and professional responsibilities.
  4. Human Systems and Theoretical Foundations
    Demonstrate knowledge of major theories and practice skills used to support individuals, families, small groups, organizations, and broader social systems.
  5. Service Delivery and Professional Roles
    Function effectively within human services delivery systems by demonstrating professionalism and an understanding of the roles, responsibilities, abilities, and limitations of entry-level human services practitioners.
  6. Crisis Intervention Skills
    Demonstrate foundational knowledge of crisis intervention principles and appropriate application strategies within human services settings.
  7. Historical and Systemic Understanding
    Explain the historical development of the human services profession and the evolution of service delivery systems.
  8. Program Planning and Evaluation
    Utilize systematic approaches to assess service needs, develop and implement appropriate intervention strategies, and evaluate outcomes to improve service effectiveness.

Assessment and Continuous Improvement

Student learning outcomes are assessed through a variety of direct and indirect measures, including course assignments, field-based learning experiences, examinations, reflective writing, and performance-based evaluations. Assessment results are reviewed regularly to support continuous improvement of curriculum, instruction, and program effectiveness in alignment with SACSCOC standards.
