DTC Enrolls First Licensed
Practical Nursing Program for
Fall 2007
Denmark
Technical College received
approval from The South Carolina
Board of Nursing and
the South
Carolina Technical College
System in July to implement a
Practical Nursing Diploma
Program.
Denmark
Technical College’s Practical
Nursing Diploma Program is a
3-term cohort-based program
which is designed to enroll 20
full time students. New students
begin in the fall and attend the
spring and summer terms to
complete the program. As a
Technical College, Denmark
Technical College serves
primarily Bamberg, Barnwell, and
Allendale Counties.
“Denmark Technical College is
very pleased to implement the
Practical Nursing Program this
year. The College has been
preparing for the program with
the installation of new
state-of-the-art labs and the
purchasing of nursing
equipment. The Practical
Nursing program will be a great
asset to health care providers
and residents within our service
area,” said Dr. John Waddell,
President of Denmark Technical
College.
Denmark Technical College has
responded to a critical need
within its communities,
With the shortage of nurses in
the service area, this program
will enable Denmark Technical
College to contribute to the
economic development of the
service area.
In preparation for the Nursing
Program, Bonnie Stroman, Dean of
Nursing at Denmark Technical
College, arrived in February
2007. Ms. Stroman
has more than 33
years of experience, to include
six years teaching practical
nursing students.The
faculty also includes Deborah
Smoak and Teneane Foster, who
serve as instructors for the
program.
“The nursing faculty, staff and
students are pleased to be a
part of this very exciting time
for Denmark Technical College
and our community. The first
class of Practical Nursing
students is in full swing with
their learning both in lecture
and skills lab portion of the
program. The faculty and I are
excited as we instruct and guide
these men and women into
becoming Licensed Practical
Nurses,” said Bonnie Stroman.
Upon completion
of the practical nursing
program, graduates will be
eligible to take the National
Council Licensure Examination
for Practical Nurses to become a
Licensed Practical Nurse. The
LPN may then practice nursing
with the guidance of a
registered nurse or a physician
in a variety of settings.
