Denmark Technical College
Students Attend Regional Award
Conference
Denmark
Technical College was one of
three Technical Colleges in
South Carolina to host the 2007
Phi-Theta Kappa Carolina Region
Awards Conference, which was
held in Greenville, South
Carolina. The conference
recognizes the achievements of
Phi-Theta Kappa Chapters of two
year Colleges.
Denmark
Technical College students Vicki
Allen, Office Systems Technology
Major; Anthony Braye, Computer
Technology Major; Rochelle Link,
Human Services Major; Erica
Oliver, Office Systems
Technology Major; and Khadidra
Washington, Associate in Arts
Major, was accompanied by Mrs.
Michelle McDowell, Executive
Dean of Student Services at
Denmark Technical College, and
Phi-Theta Kappa advisors, Alzena
Robinson and John Bennett.
Phi Theta Kappa,
the largest honor society,
serves to recognize and
encourage the academic
achievement of two-year college
students and provide
opportunities for individual
growth and development.
Phi-Theta Kappa Members are also
nominated for inclusion in the
National Dean’s List, a
prestigious publication of
outstanding students in
two-year, four-year, and
graduate degree programs.
The students
received four group awards: A
Five-Star Award in the highest
category, which recognizes
chapter progress toward service
goals; A Four Clover Chapter
Award, for outstanding project
service; A Carolina Super Stars
award, which recognizes
outstanding performance in
Phi-Theta Kappa; and A
Scholarship Hallmark Award for
outstanding performance in the
areas of Scholarship,
Leadership, Service, and
Fellowship.
Vickie Allen
received the Carolinas Hall of
Honor Award for outstanding
participation in service
activities. Ms. Alzena Robinson
and Mr. John Bennett were
recipients of the Horizon Award,
which is presented to new
advisors who participate in
regional and international
programs. Denmark Technical
College also received Honorable
Mention for being named Most
Improved Chapter.
“This is the
second year that Denmark
Technical College participated
in the Awards Program for
Phi-Theta Kappa. The students
worked tirelessly to provide
services to faculty, staff,
students and the local
community. We are proud of their
achievements and encourage them
to continue their service to the
community,” said Carolyn
Fennell, Chief Academic Officer
at Denmark Technical College.
The students
received awards based on their
development and involvement in
various service activities. In
July 2006, the students
participated in a project named
“Operation Green: Improving Our
Communities,” in which they
partnered with the Community
Pride Project and held a
Community Clean-up in Bamberg,
South Carolina. They designed
and distributed flyers to
promote the event. The students
also planned and implemented a
Voter Registration Drive on the
Denmark Tech Campus. The purpose
was to engage students in the
importance of participating in
the electoral process by
registering to vote. They were
successful in registering 25
students.
“Phi-Theta Kappa
gave me the opportunity to not
only learn many new things, but
changed my point of view to
realize that helping others
families is important,” said
Erica Oliver.
During the
conference, four members were
inducted in the Alumni Chapter
of Phi-Theta Kappa. They will
continue their services upon
graduation at Denmark Technical
College. Students inducted were:
Vicki Allen, Anthony Braye,
Rochelle Link, and Erica Oliver. |
