Denmark Technical College Welcomes Its 9th President

Denmark Technical College administrators, faculty, staff, and students, recently welcomed its 9th President, Dr. John K. Waddell. Dr. Waddell assumed his position on March 1, 2007 following Dr. Joann R.G. Boyd-Scotland who retired after a 13-year tenure as president.

A South Carolina native, Dr. Waddell brings a wealth of administrative experience to Denmark Technical College having previously served as president at Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia, and Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas.  He has served as a Vice President/Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Services.  Other direct responsibilities have included: institutional administration, faculty governance, strategic planning, resource acquisition, accreditation, technology, finance, budget development, coordination of Title III and Title IV federal programs and crafting unique, workforce-oriented articulation agreements.

In addition to his presidential posts, Dr. Waddell was appointed to the White House Board of Advisors for Historically Black Colleges and Universities in 2002. He attended the Harvard Institute of Educational  Advancement and earned a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University. He also has a Master’s in Student Personnel and a Bachelor’s in Secondary Education from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Waddell is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Phi Delta Kappa.  He was also selected as the 2000 “Black Alumnus of the Year” at the University of South Carolina.

DTC’s Electromechanical Engineering Program Accredited by ABET

Denmark Technical College’s Electromechanical Engineering Associate Degree Program has made significant developments with the addition of robotics within its curriculum, recent construction of the Engineering Technology Center and most recently its third accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

“We are excited about the reaccreditation as well as the completion of the $1,000,000 newly remodeled Engineering Technology Center, which will provide our students with additional state-of-the art training. Integrating robotics into the curriculum will give our students the skills needed to move into the 21st century,” said Dr. John K. Waddell, President of Denmark Technical College.

The Engineering Technology Center will also allow additional training to be scheduled through the Continuing Education Division in order to support and meet the needs of local business and industries within the service area.

Dr. Ambrish Lavania, Dean of Industrial and Related Technologies has been instrumental in the development of the Electromechanical Engineering Program. This includes establishing a longstanding relationship with the National Aeronautics and Science Association (NASA). In 2003, Denmark Technical College was the recipient of a $300,000 grant to establish a NASA Robotics Center. The new Engineering Technology Center which houses state-of-the art robotics, electronics and electromechanical engineering technology laboratories and classrooms, along with the NASA Robotics Center, has opened for classes this fall.

Several Denmark Technical College students have received opportunities to complete NASA internships along with becoming recipients of Curriculum Improvement Partnership Awards which allowed them to participate in training symposiums that were sponsored by NASA.

The Electromechanical Engineering Program prepares students in basic circuit analysis, Electronic circuits and applications of engineering principles in the manufacturing, installation, testing and repair of electromechanical systems.
