Assembled at the William L. McDuffie Student Services Center, April 2, were about a dozen representatives from area businesses and industries to learn of the offerings that Denmark Technical College has, and to create partnerships.

Following a welcome by Leon Harden, chair of the DTC Area Commission, greetings from VP for Academic Affairs Carolyn McGay and Stephen Mason, Dean of Continuation at Denmark Tech, Lisa Stokes, Director of the Bamberg County Chamber of Commerce, Jim Kiker, Training Engineer for Allied Air Enterprises, and Williette Stately, Director of Homan Resources for Delevan Corporation, Russ Darnell, Executive Director of ReadySC spoke of “partnerships between the technical colleges and SC businesses and industries.”

ReadySC is a division of the SC Technical College System,  has, as its mission, to promote the economic and workforce development of the state of SC, providing customized training for new and expanding business and industry.

“We are in an emerging economy,” Darnell said … “we must know what skills, what knowledge that our students need to be successful in business today.

“Our process is simple,” he explained. “We do what we cal a 3-D process. The first is Discovery. We work with your subject matter experts to determine the skills, knowledge and abilities needed and to define the culture and working environment you want to create at your new facility. Next is Design... based on the findings of our Discovery process, we design training to meet your specific needs, whether it’s Team-based? Five-S? GMP? We don’t just deliver these individual courses; we can integrate their principles into every facet of the training so that your training plan is customized specifically to you.

“Our goal is to help you start production with employees who are already immersed in your culture and processes. We develop our curriculum based on your timeframe. Whether your schedule allows for in-depth task analysis and comprehensive training solutions or just-in-time development and delivery, we provide the training solution that is right for you. And Delivery... We are completely flexible in our delivery options including Hands-on simulations of your working environment, Computer based training, Virtual recreations of your work processes, Hand-held video delivery options, One-on-one training and mentoring,  and of course classroom training.

“Our 3-D Training Process generates a training program that is customized specifically for you. Our whole existence,” he said, “is about economic development in this area where we partner with the economic development of the community.”

Denmark Tech is the only technical college in South Carolina with on-campus housing. The college is a public, comprehensive, historically Black, two-year technical college annually serving approximately 2,000 credit and continuing education students, a mix of traditional, nontraditional, full-time and part-time.

The College's primary service area is comprised of Bamberg, Barnwell, and Allendale Counties with a legislated mandate to serve students throughout the state. As an open-door institution, the College provides affordable, post-secondary education culminating in associate degrees, diplomas, or certificates, to citizens from diverse educational and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The General Assembly authorized the establishment of Denmark Technical College in 1947 and the College began operation on March 1, 1948, as the Denmark Branch of the South Carolina Trade School System. In 1969, the control of Denmark Area Trade School (Denmark Technical College) was transferred to the South Carolina Advisory Committee for Technical Training which acted under the supervision of the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education. During the same year, the name of the College was changed to Denmark Technical Education Center. In 1979, the institution was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and assumed its present designation as Denmark Technical College.

Following a quick luncheon, the participants broke into three groups to tour the campus.
