Master Barber Dale Davis Receives Life Learner Award

Dale Davis with award
Denmark – Denmark Technical College (DTC) is proud to announce Master Barbering Instructor Dale Davis has received a Dr. Eunice M. Dudley Life Learner Award. Davis is the Master Barber instructor for the DTC Barbering Diploma program and received his award at the annual Dudley’s Educational and Motivational Symposium recently held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Dudley has been a major hair care provider for 50 years, and the award reflects Davis’s lifetime commitment to education and higher learning. Professional development is very important in this line of work, and Davis frequently attends workshops and trade shows to stay abreast of industry trends and techniques bringing the skills back to teach in the classroom.
Davis seemed predestined to become a barber. He began his career as a teenager, training under his father, who was also a barber, going on to enroll as a barber student at DTC under the tutelage of Master Barber Leroy Ruff. In 1986, he received both a barbering diploma and associate degree in general technology with an emphasis in small business, which gave him the business knowledge to become an entrepreneur and eventually open his own beauty and barber shop. Davis recently celebrated his 23rd anniversary as an instructor at DTC and is still a champion of the industry. “Barbering is a service profession for which there is always a need. People want to look their best and will always need their hair cut or styled. This skill will enable you to make a good living with a minimal investment of money and time. We have students who have graduated, became licensed and opened up their own barbershops. When you combine the skills you learn in the Barbering program with the Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management program at DTC, you will have enough technical and management skills to succeed as an entrepreneur.”
To become a licensed barber in South Carolina, students must complete 1500 clock hours in classroom lectures and hands-on clinical experiences. The Barbering program at DTC is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills required to pass the South Carolina State Board Barbering exam.
“DTC is proud of the quality of our instructors, and Mr. Davis is a prime example of the dedication and professionalism our faculty bring to the classroom. I congratulate him on this well-deserved award,” said Dr. Christopher Hall, Interim President. “The Barbering and Cosmetology Programs are utilized by many in the community who take advantage of the free services performed by our students, under the supervision of our instructors. The end goal of Denmark Tech is to enable a student to make a livable wage, who in turn can better their community and raise the living standard of their family and these programs are a great vehicle to achieve that goal.”
The Barbering department offers free haircuts for the public Monday through Thursday depending on student availability and is currently accepting students for spring 2018. For more information stop by or contact Mr. Davis directly at 803.793.5203.
