Denmark – On Monday, August 21, Denmark Technical College will be the site of A Minute of Midnight: Celebrating the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse.  The event, sponsored by the Community Rural Arts Work League of Bamberg County, CRAWL, will take place on the main campus from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.  Dr. Yvette McDaniel, Music Faculty at Denmark Technical College and Chairperson of CRAWL may be contacted at (803) 793-5259 or through email at bcsccrawl@gmail.com.  The event is free and is open to the public; however, registration is required.
Dr. Christopher Hall, Interim President of the College has gone the extra mile to ensure fun, education and safety for all participants.  Alumni, faculty, staff and students will assist community volunteers for an active day.  Doors open at the McDuffie Student Services Center, the College’s gym and student activities center at 12:45 p.m.  Limited shuttle service will be available.
Scheduled activities are storytelling, kinder-ready games and puzzles, and NASA uploads for the youngest visitors.  Crafting will be available to all and is especially geared to the Institution’s young, future scholars.  Middle and high school students as well as adults may be interested in the Slam-dunk and Double-dutch competitions.  Educational Moments will be interspersed.  Opportunities to observe the effect of the eclipse on nature will be highlighted as well.
The mature visitors (senior citizens) will be hosted in the Technology Center of the Carroll-Lebby Library.  There, they will be able to utilize individual computers to watch the eclipse as it travels and to communicate with NASA and other eclipse websites.   Also, they may find interests in eclipse puzzles, word games and the Eclipse Bingo competition.  All facilities are readied for physically challenged visitors and the entire community is welcome.
“I understand that we have visitors coming from as far away as Orlando, FL,” exclaimed President Hall, excitedly. “I think that we have a chance to show what DTC is all about – Denmark Truly Cares.”
All visitors are encouraged to bring their personal solar eclipse glasses, but CRAWL will have a limited amount of glasses available at the event courtesy of Phoenix Specialty Manufacturing Co., Faith Action Ministries and several private donors.  Eclipse totality is scheduled for 2:48 p.m.
In honor of the Great American Solar Eclipse, Ultramacs Music Group has donated a 10’ by 19’ US flag that will don the outside in view of the eclipse watchers.  Eclipse Watchers or Umbraphiles will need to sign two (2) participant waivers in order to enter.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian.  Space is limited, therefore, pre-registration is encouraged.
